SECTION 1
My group, Erikka and Riley, wanted to increase awareness of the recycling opportunities that our school has around. We had a meeting with Mr. Hoover who did not realize the variety of recycling bins we had on school grounds. All of a sudden these blue bins, that is shown to the left, appeared and we did not know where they came from. With Riley's connections with Royal Eco Club and Mrs. Safi, we discovered that a HSE grad received a grant to see how many cans and bottles are collected in the high school. These bins will be here for a while so we decided to use this to our advantage! We talked to the Student Council sponsors and they agreed to use the collection of these bins and recycling them as a service opportunity. My friend, Graham, who edits many of the newscasts for HSETV, informed all of us that it would take 3 weeks for our segment to be on the news.

SECTION 2
My group decided to continue the recycling project we started the last section. We wanted to further our mission of increasing awareness by creating a video. It includes a fun rap, inspired by the Office, and an informational piece. It starts off rapping about recycling empty water bottles and disposing them into the new recycling bins and not trash cans, then it moves to Riley who talks to the audience in a more calm matter. We wanted to approach this idea in a new and fun way and we thought by creating a video and submitting it to HSETV would make us step out of our comfort zone. We struggled with time management and editing the video on iMovie, since we are not tech savvy. We did not get as much done as last time due to the decrease class time to work on our project as well as our busy schedules after school.

SECTION 3
I decided to start a new project this time with Erikka Ededuwa. Riley Huffman, from the past passion project, split off to work on her music. Erikka and I wanted to directly help people in someway in the HSE school district and something we had in common is Durbin Elementary. I went to Durbin and Erikka's mom is currently the principal there, with these connections we thought this would be a great project to tackle. At first, we struggled with how we were going to impact the kids at Durbin, but a roadblock that we ran into is our busy schedules. We did not know how to go to Durbin to help out with us going to school for most of the day and after school sports. During this section we made a plan for the after school program at Durbin and also teachers of how we could help them if they were willing to let us help them out. We did not know how to overcome this obstacle until we presented it during our gallery walk. We found out another student in fifth period was doing a similar project and we should think about joining them for the next section. At the end of this section, we did not know where we were headed for the next time nor what we plan on accomplishing.

SECTION 4
Erikka and I decided to continue with the project from last time to possibly getting more success than we did the last section. We decided not to contact the person in fifth period about what they are doing for their passion project because it would be difficult to be productive and communicate since we could not seem them in school. We emailed Erikka's mom, Durbin Elementary's principal, as well as the assistant principal. We said in the email that we were willing to help out at Durbin with whatever they needed. They responded and were delighted for two high school students to take time out of their days to positively impact someone else's life. Mr. Guenin, our innovations teacher, helped us solve the roadblock of us being busy by letting us go to Durbin during the school day. This helped us tremendously and we successfully went to Durbin! We helped the guidance counselor create a chart for the fourth grade parents that she will send out on Excel and we also entertained a student when they had a reward to spend five minutes with the principal. We plan on doing more hands on activities that other people will see rather than the behind the scenes things like we did on our first visit. |
