Food Pantry
I learned a lot in this project that I wouldn't have had the chance to learn in class. I learned how to work with people who have different approaches to new problems, how to solve a REAL world problem, and how to work efficiently. My team consisted of Courtney Baker and Laura Nix. The problem that my team and I faced was how to increase awareness and donations to the food pantry. I was attracted to this challenge because through National Honors Society, I helped a lot with the food panty and I enjoyed the idea of helping people in the community I live in. We worked with the people at Fall Creek Township and we first proposed to create a $10 list of items that donators could pick up and easily buy from the store. After communicating amongst my team and reviewing our partners reactions, we decided to use the donate at a basketball game idea. Our community partners loved the idea and thought that if you brought in 6 cans then you get free admission to the game, but if you brought any less then you would get that amount off your admission. This way, it would bring awareness and donations to the food pantry! There are many takeaways that I had from this project like how to work with a positive attitude, work with people who have different personalities, and I learned how to solve a problem that the solution is not straightforward. However, I did have to go through some challenges. I had to face communication problems, scheduling problems, as well as finalizing our ideas. We overcame these by stepping back and looking at the big picture and tried not to get frustrated at the problem we had to solve. Although we all helped each other out, my contribution was contacting our partners, help problem solve, and set up the meeting dates. I am glad I was able to work with the Fall Creek Township Food Pantry and help them solve their problem they were experiencing. I am happy that they took our idea that we proposed and decided to run with it. If I were to do this project again, I would take more time to plan the meetings we had with the partners so it is more organized even though we did go with the flow. Overall, I loved this project and loved working with REAL problems with real people.
